Beverly Tucker Lacy of the Presbyterian Church in Fredericksburg. Stressing the importance of religion in the life of the soldier, Jackson offered Lacy the position of unofficial chaplain to the 2nd Corps. In addition to serving at the pulpit, Lacy was to organize the Chaplaincy to better serve the spiritual needs of the soldiers. A staff officer recalled that Jackson invited Lacy to spend the night and, prior to retiring, they prayed together. It was a monumental moment in the history of the Army of Northern Virginia. Lacy subsequently accepted the general's offer and was instrumental in giving direction to the "great revival" which swept through the army in 1863. |
