To the west across nearly 500 yards of open ground lay the river. On the hillside of the opposite bank, the Federal Army had massed 57 field artillery pieces without the knowledge of the confederates below. General Bragg, unaware of the danger, ordered the 'Orphans' forward to capture the hill. At four o'clock, the attack began.
